Werewolf II: Progeny of the Hunt

Please read these rules carefully, there are some minor changes to the game.

The Rules of Werewolf

Overview:

Our story takes place in the hamlet of Wayside, a small farming community in the country of Shilling. After a recent wolfhunt, the villagers now find themselves beset by a pack of werewolves in their town! If something is not done, the entire village population will be slain.

There will be 17 players. 3 Werewolves, 1 Seer, 1 Angel and 12 Villagers.

Teams:

There are two teams, werewolves and villagers. The werewolf team is composed only of werewolves. They all know each other. On the villager team are the villagers, the seer, and the angel. The Seer and Angel will not know each other's identity, and the villagers don't know the true nature of any of the other players.

Winning Conditions:

The werewolves win by eliminating enough people so that they make up half of the players in the game. The villagers win by eliminating all the werewolves.

Details on Player Roles:

  • The Villager - Anyone who is a regular villager is trying to lynch all the wolves. They win if all the wolves are dead, even if they are dead themselves.
    .
  • The Werewolf - Werewolves talk and vote just like the villagers. One of the 3 Werewolves will be the leader, responsible for communicating to the GM the name of each villager the werewolves choose to kill. The other two wolves are the leader's lieutenants. A new leader will be randomly selected from the lieutenants if the leader is killed.
    .
  • The Angel - The angel talks and votes just like the villagers. The angel may choose any one person to protect from the wolves. The angel is on the villagers' side and has the same winning conditions. If a villager is targeted by the Werewolves, and has been chosen by the Angel, they will survive. The angel can save a player as many times as s/he wishes, but can never save her/himself.

The angel cannot reveal her/himself as long as s/he lives. Players can not ask if another player is the Angel, nor should a player if asked, answer. Hypotheticals about the Angel are permissible however (e.g. "if I were the Angel then Player X might be worth a save this round", and so forth)
    .

  • The Seer - The seer talks and votes just like the villagers. The seer is allowed to determine the role of any one townsperson each round. The seer is on the villager side and has the same winning conditions. The seer at some point will come out and share his or her information. Once the Seer reveals, the Angel can no longer protect him (for obvious reasons). No other player is allowed to announce their role at any time.

You can not lie about being the Seer!

Game play:

Roles will be randomly determined by the GM. I will e-mail roles to the players. Please do not discuss your roles with anyone, live, dead or otherwise as to prevent accidents. If you are not a living Werewolf, you are not allowed to send game related e-mails or PM's to any other living player. Living werewolf to living werewolf is the only acceptable private communication between players. Players may send e-mails to the GM at any time and I will attempt to answer any rules questions, or process any votes as quickly as possible.

To start the game, the Werewolves will give me a name of who their first victim is (this is referred to as the round 0, or R0, kill.) Once I announce that player's untimely demise and the voting deadline, round 1 begins and all the players can discuss what to do by posting here on the thread. Before the specified time, all players must submit a vote, either via e-mail to the GM, or by direct declaration through the use of a {VOTING} tag, as in {VOTING: Freddy}.

If multiple votes are submitted from the same player, the most recent will be counted.

Once the voting deadline is passed, I will reveal who voted for whom. In the event of a tie, a town meeting will be held. The leading vote getters would each get a chance to "plead their case" to the townsfolk. Then there would be a re-vote due within 24 hrs. If at this point, there is still a tie then the decision will be left to Phillimane, the Elven Goddess of Justice. A die roll will determine the outcome of cases left to Phillimane's wisdom.

Once a player has been selected to be lynched, I will announce which player has been eliminated and what role they had. This will be the end of the day phase, and the beginning of the night phase.

After the lynching, the Werewolves, Seer and the Angel, all e-mail me their targets. If the Angel's target is the same as the Werewolves for that round, and only that round that player will be saved.

E-mail Versus PM:

MOTL PMs often break when they contain formatting, and no e-mail notification is sent when PMs are exchanged. Furthermore, players can watch the who's online page in an attempt to track who is on MOTL and when. Therefore, I will not use PMs to communicate with the players.

Game communication with the Game Master will be via e-mail to gm{at}seggelin.com.

Once the wolf-team is selected, I will create a special distribution e-mail that the wolves can use to easily contact all the other wolves and carry on e-mail discussions if they wish. Wolves who die will be automatically removed from the distribution.

How To Sign Up:

Send an e-mail to the GM requesting to play. In the e-mail include your MOTL name, and your full name. I need this to confirm all the player e-mails. Please don't post a signup request to this thread.

I will update the list of players here as signups come in and send out roles once I have 17 players.

Other Items:

I urge all who sign up to play to be consistent throughout, as failure to post/vote may lead to you being asked not to play future rounds, or me removing you from a game with an alternate.

Rounds will never end early, and there will be NO extensions for nonvotes. Players will be given the voting deadline of 8 PM Pacific/11 PM Eastern time on the date specified, and reminded of the deadline on the day votes are due.

I will not play guessing games. If I am not in receipt of an e-mail vote from a player, or if the player did not use a proper {VOTING} tag, I will not dig through player posts to find hints as to whom the player may have wanted to vote for.

If you are currently alive in mafia, you can not play WW and vice-versa.

Dead players are NOT permitted to post anything to the thread apart from one goodbye message when they are slain or lynched. Players are absolutely restricted from dropping any sorts of hints or suspicions in their goodbye post.

Dead players may join the Wayside Zombie Club by sending an e-mail to zc_request{at}seggelin.com once they are deceased. Just as with the signup mail, their message should include their MOTL name and their full name. They will be given an e-mail addy they can use to send messages to all the other dead players who have joined. Spectators may also joing the Zombie Club with the stipulation that if it becomes necessary to replace a player, no Zombie Club member is eligible.

Flavor:

The game is set in a medieval time period in a country called Shilling on a continent known as New Irth. In addition to their role (Villager, Angel, Seer, or WW) each player will be assigned a race and an occupation that they have within the community. These aspects of the player's persona are used strictly for building the game storyline as it progresses--this is not an RPG and players do not need to roleplay. A player's race and occupation have NO bearing on their role whatsoever.

Persona assignment is determined randomly.

Many of the races you will be familiar with if you've played AD&D--humans, dwarves, gnomes, elves, half-elves, half-orcs. But some of the characters will be races I've used in my own campaigns which are unique or not typically used as a character race--Alayuyularian, Puman, Drow Elf.

quote:
Quick Race Notes:
  • Humans - boring
  • Dwarves - hardy, stout, small folk, typically very serious and devout, proficient warriors and miners
  • Gnomes - the littlest of the little folk, fond of wild parties, drink, and fisticuffs. Proficient thieves, farmers and brewers.
  • Elves - slight forest folk, uncommonly wise, somewhat shorter than humans, but much longer lived, proficient sages and mages
  • Half-elves - progeny of human/elf unions
  • Half-Orcs - rare offspring from orc raids, tall (6.5 to 7.5 feet typically) and strongly built, unhandsome and oft mistrusted, proficient warriors and military trainers
  • Alayuyularians - tall humanoids (typically 6 to 7 feet) from the Alayuyularian Archipelago, coal-black skin with a bluish sheen, indigo or green eyes, deep red or occasionally blond hair, knees and elbows can flex in either direction, throat contains a double-sarynx rendering their speech like melodious windchimes or ghostly birdsong. Proficient archers, bards, dancers, or minstrels
  • Pumans - deeply religious catfolk which were native to New Irth before settlers from Old Irth arrived, they have the heads and tails of mountain lions, but humanoid bodies covered with fur of tan, golden, or gray. They can speak in a rough common tongue, while their native tongue is full of growsl, hisses, and fluid consonants. Pumans are typically folk of the wilds, but some have adapted to town life. Proficient warriors, druids, or clerics.
  • Drow Elves - those that dwell in the matriarchal society of the Drow are uniformly evil, but occasional foundlings are raised outside of the Drow warrens and may be as kindly as any New Irther

The town will also contain some NPC's used strictly for flavor--they don't play on either team and do not count in the population.

I hope you will enjoy my particular spin on WW and will let me run future games as well. For those of you put off by the differences (flavor, e-mail, voting tags) I urge you to approach it with an open mind and at least try it once. If everyone hates it I won't run future games in this manner.

-- Chuck

Since you've expressed an interest, I'll e-mail you the excerpt on Gnomes from the New Irth Encyclopedia. Apart from being a typical gnome, your persona is that of an equestrian--loves horses... which is fitting because Gnomes also tend to drink beer from troughs.

Roles have been sent. It is now round 0 nightphase and the wolves are selecting their first kill.

FLAVOR:
The Wayside Annual Wolfhunt was a rousing success this year, in total 31 wolves were slain in the all-day affair. For the local farmers that means less sheep stolen, and less risk of being attacked when working their fields.

But the local astrologers made much of the fact that Septhembre 6 fell on a No-moon Day. Given Irth's three satellites, Temba, Hosi and Fleck, it is unusual for none to be in the sky--and generally considered an ill omen by all except the Pumans, who think it a sign of good fortune.

As it happens in every year, the entire community took part, and several teams visited local woods and environs. As always, the daunting bulk of the haunted Ailvine Forest was the most dangerous excursion, and 17 of the townsfolk were on that particular trek. The unusual event was the sudden and unexpected fog that fell over the Ailvine that afternoon, during which the group's members became separated and lost for a time. Lost and alone in the Ailvine--every child's nightmare--where the trees, so twisted by the evil of the long dead druid Durward Willow, are known to scream and bleed if their branches are broken.

This was a matter of particular concern later when many of the wolves taken from the Ailvine were pronounced tainted by Serla Daroo, the local zoologist and assistant librarian of the Wayside Library. The Daroo, a former elf ranger of some reknown, said that wolfmen may be among the pack these wolves came from. Lycanthrope is contagious.

All of the Ailvine hunters assured the townsfolk that they had not been bitten, but the concern remains. It was only 2 years ago that a pair of dopplegangers impersonated professors at the Farmer's Guild and killed several locals--that tragedy is fresh in the memory of the village.

The local gnomes, out of their skulls on Tente and drink, were of course not going to let matters of life and death spoil a good party, and the wolfhunt was followed by a typically outrageous party in the local tavern, the Inne of Ye Plastered Dragon.

Though most gnomish parties would generally last, well, for a week, at the "request" of the town guard this one was concluded a few hours before dawn and the residents returned to their beds to fitful dreams and an uneasy feeling that the night was pregnant with danger, and that when the suns shone again upon Wayside, something would be different.

Damn the town guard for prematurely ending our festivities! They wouldn't know a good party if it bit 'em in the arse! Never mind that I ended up face down in one of the troughs outside my stables... Speaking of stables, me horses have been spooked all night. Ay, something evil is afoot. I only hope I have enough spirits stowed away to make it through it all.

Hey now! Everything we do is for the safety of the village! Drunken belligerence in public is a crime, ya know; even for dwarves.
