I am at one with humanity. In the last 4 hours I have drunk 3 Gin and Tonics, 12 Buds, and 2 Dos Equis Amber Ales and feel a profound love for mankind, even though I generally do not care for Budweiser.

I am deep in the post work for Peter Pan now... man am I getting tired... but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Gallery should be ready by tomorrow, on schedule. Then I have to dive straight into the middle school dance work... that needs to be done by Tuesday. Then after that it's the highschool grad shoot, but I have more time on that since it is unpaid work. But I managed to take a few minutes out, come to MOTL and do my usual wonderful job of just being so lovable and making all sorts of friends. Yeah, that's what happened there. __________________ -- PlasteredDragon A.K.A. Chuck Seggelin * Sagewood Studios * My Flickr Photostream * My Blog *

So, I got a bunch of money for graduating (yay!), and I'm considering buying an entry-level DSLR. Any suggestions on where to look/what to look for?

My suggesting is to go to the store and try out different bodies and see which one feels right to you. Canon and Nikon are fairly equivalent (despite what the various fanboys will say), so buy whatever feels best in your hands. Just remember that when you buy a body you are generally buying into a product line (Brand X Body = best performance with brand X peripherals and accessories, i.e. lenses.) And the other thing to remember is it's more about the glass than it is about the body. If you buy an awesome body and put crappy glass on it, you're going to find getting good photos very challenging. The nice thing is if you buy into a product line, try out a low-end body with a decent lens, you can swap the body out much later for a nicer one. Me personally? I was a Nikon film guy (a billion years ago N8008S... yes that old) who became a Canon digital guy. I started with the (comparitively) cheap Rebel series (specifically the 400D, the XTi) and slowly went bonkers because I was so used to film that the crop sensor made me nuts--if you haven't been an SLR shooter up to now, that won't be a problem for you. Once I decided to make my second attempt at turning pro, I relegated the XTi to backup gear and sold the most expensive and/or unique portions of my MtG collection to build a solid pro kit around the EOS 5D... mmmm full frame goodness. Anyway, it really comes down to how much you have to spend. If it's less than $600 you are either going to have to go with used or 3rd party gear. But if you can get together $600, you can get a good with a solid product line (and buy NEW gear.) I'd recommend something in the Canon Rebel line XT, XTi, Xsi... doesn't matter, any of them will do fine. B&H offers the EOS Rebel XS with an 18-55mm IS kit lens for $540. The kit lens is good enough for practice, and once you learn its limitations you can work within them to get decent pictures. I also recommend you plonk down $100 and pick up the rather legendary Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens. The aperture is only 5 blades so you will get weird bokeh unless it is wide open, and the build is completely cheap plastic, but it is otherwise a SWEET piece of starter glass. It will produce tack sharp images and would also be a good lens to learn on (just remember, if you are a film SLR guy, that it's going to feel more like 80mm than 50mm thanks to the crop sensor). You won't be shooting architecture, macro, or landscapes with the 50--but you can do street and all sorts of portraiture with it. It's long been a source of amazement that such a cheap lens performs so well, but it has earned quite a following among Canon guys, garnering such nicknames as "the plastic fantastic" and the "nifty fifty". In truth, if you ever graduate to top notch glass, you'll probably put your EF 50mm 1.8, but in the meantime you'll likely fall in love with it. Anyway, like I said, you should try different gear and see what you like. One thing that might be a deciding factor is if you have any photographer friends who have gear they would lend you or who would be willing to teach you on a particular product line--having such a resource handy might make that product line worth investing in. Good luck and happy shooting! __________________ -- PlasteredDragon A.K.A. Chuck Seggelin * Sagewood Studios * My Flickr Photostream * My Blog *

The answer to that question depends largely on your current weight level. If you weigh 90 pounds, you are going to need to have something amputated. If you weigh 300 pounds, you will find shedding small amounts of weight easier. Most weight I ever lost was through pneumonia. I dropped from 255 to about 215... about 16% of my body mass. It took three months and I wouldn't recommend it. I was pretty f'd up for a long time afterward. But 5 weeks is an awfully short time to be setting a significant weight goal, if you aren't careful you could injure yourself. I recommend seeking the advice of a professional nutritionist. Talk to your GP for more info. __________________ -- PlasteredDragon A.K.A. The last few days go on a low carb, low fat high protein diet. My nutrition instructor at sullivan said it's safe to do for a few days and flushes excess water out of your system. That said, it's only short-term and risks damaging your kidneys if done any more than a couple days. For the full 15 pounds...i honestly suggest just walking a lot and watching how much of what foods you eat. Skip ice cream after dinner and have an apple. Drink tea instead of soda. Eat cereal as a snack instead of chips. 3 pounds a week is very, very obtainable. I dropped 5 in 3 days of starvation when i had braces and my mouth hurt so bad i couldn't even bite down on anything (that was when i tried that experiment of pureeing grilled chicken with corn......do not do this), and i've done 3 pounds in a week just by fixing my diet. Good luck, whatever you do.

Regiment of exercise, and calorie displacement? For me that was walking a couple miles a day, and replacing soda/other beverages with water as much as possible. If you work in a big building you could try taking the stairs--thats even better for you then walking. I'm NOT in great shape exercise wise, but those simple steps helped me shed a lot of weight.

The catch is that you need to buy a drink. Doesn't need to be beer. Soda is fine too. Trust me, Mary Washington kids abused this to no end. And get there early. If you get there after 6, expect to wait a long time for a table. It's a damn fine burger for a dollar, though. 8 oz angus patty is no joke. Cheese and Bacon are an extra buck each, but still, $3 for an 8 oz burger with smoked gouda and applewood smoked bacon is a deal like no other. We also don't offer temps on dollar burger night. They'll be somewhere between medium and well all night, since it's impossible to keep up with the sheer volume of burgers otherwise.

Sounds like a real good deal! I don't think we're going there this monday but maybe a monday soon in the future. I bet it is crazy cooking for Monday nights! Has it slowed down since college got out?
