I strongly agree, 2GB RAM seems a minimum to run Windows, 4GB would be definitely good. __________________ The Swiss Guy is there! Playing: T1.X Dark Zoo, T1 & T1.5 Bant

I agree with the get-a-Mac sentiment. They can be had for around $1000 and are excellent machines and will meet all your needs worry-free.

I tend to think macbooks are overpriced. If I were to buy a laptop right now it would probably be either an Asus or Toshiba. Good quality, and newegg has some really great deals.

13 inches are fine, unless you want a bigger screen, I have a 2 years old MacBook and it's still working well. You can also have student discount in Canada

Buy the base unit and upgrade the RAM yourself. Apple can't get the RAM as cheap as you can (for various reasons), so you can save the monies buying your own RAM and spending 5 minutes swapping the chips.

Oh hai.I'm back when I need something. My Vista laptop since yesterday has been running ridiculously slowly. I think it's the memory, but can't tell any more than that. Takes 60+ seconds to load word, Chrome says it's not responding, it's not the internet connection, it's windows explorer, it's everything. How do I begin to diagnosis this? I reformatted it two months ago and I haven't done anything other than run computer games on it all last week. Then it was off all Monday, and Tuesday it runs so slowly I can't use it. It seems to run better in safe mode, but it's not like you can do much in safe mode.

You could check to make sure it still recognizes all your ram (and that none of them are busted) by going to run -> dxdiag

I think that's fine. The Task Manager says Total: 3061, Cached 2380, Free: 62 when I'm not running anything.

Regardless of if you intend to use it, the sheer fact that they would put such a ridiculous piece of crap in a computer these days tells me that they're probably going to do other moronic things in that machine. All told, I'd personally probably go with the last one. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! main difference between second and third Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GT 325M with NVIDIA Optimus Technology Video Memory 1G DDR3 VRAM CPU Type Intel Core i3 350M(2.26GHz) Screen 17.3" Graphics GPU/VPU ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 Video Memory 1GB DDR3 VRAM Screen Size 16" CPU Type Intel Core i7 CPU Speed 720QM(1.60GHz)
The screen has a slight difference. The CPU speed seems to be at the advantage of the first one I do not know if ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 is better than NVIDIA GeForce GT 325M with NVIDIA Optimus Technology
110$ separate the bottom one from the second. How better is the processor in the second one? What about graphic cards?

Processor on machine #2 is quad-core, #3 is dual-core, so the speed difference is not really what it seems like from sheer numbers. I'm not really sure whether 4 cores at 1.6 or 2 at 2.26 is better, to be honest. The $200 savings seems good enough to go with #3 if you're on a budget, though. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Hi All: Just popped in to hopefully get some info. Could someone please give me some clear step by step instructions on how to store something on a flash drive please? Something that I can copy and paste into a email and send to a friend who is not real familiar with computers. To be honest , I'll be using them myself as well, but this is mainly for a friend. Thanks in advance.

Update on my laptop. I tried to reinstall vista and it gave me an error. When I do a hard drive test in bios I get 07 Fail. I'm starting to suspect a hard drive problem, but I've never had that happen before. Luckily everything is backed up on an external drive, but the OS won't load now so the comp is a paperweight. If it comes down to replacing the hard drive on an almost 2-year old laptop, what is my best choice? What are any compatibility issues, and what price range or brand names should I be looking for?(HP pavilion dv2700, model FE990ua)

I'd say, simply connect it, drag and drop whatever you want in it. A flash drive is quite the same as any other external storing device.
