After having prepared myself for the tournament as I use to do, (what means having a party on Friday and not sleeping a lot on the whole weekend, together about 10 hours on 2 nights) I got up on Sunday morning at 8 am. After taking a shower, eating a bit and grabbing my binders and some shields, I started my 2-hour drive to the limited tournament I wanted to play and arrived there at 11.15.
At first we traded a bit and talked about the upcoming Extended Grand Prix (Florence) and PTQ (Salzburg), while we were waiting for the beginning of the tournament.
It finally started at 12.15, only 15 minutes late (that's quite good, I'm used to having to wait at least half an hour
)
There were about 30 people participating and everyone was handed out one Invasion starter and 2 boosters. Here's what I got:

While you can take your time to construct the deck you would have built out of these cards, I'll tell you a bit about what a friend of mine picked, who had come here together with me:
16 Removals (really! Keldon Necropolis, 2 Agonizing Demise, 2 Plague Spores, Cinder Shade, the new Ashes to Ashes, Zap and so on…)
some other good black/red creatures, who cares, his opponent won't have anything in play able to stop his beasts…
Exclude and some other good blue cards providing him a brutal B/R/u deck…
Finished with the deck out of my cards?
Really?
Ok, here's what I came up with after deciding red was to worse and black wouldn't have brought me that much, as the risk of playing 4 colors evens more than up the advantage of the good gold cards (B/U).
So I played W/U/G, all colors had about the same amount of cards:
Seashell Cameo
Armadillo Cloak
Galina's Knight *2
Wings of Hope
Sky Weaver
Opt
Stormscape Apprentice
Exclude *2
Repulse
Fact or Fiction
Kavu Titan
Kavu Climber
Thornscape Apprentice
Explosive Growth
Serpentine Kavu
Quirion Elves
Nomadic Elf
Crimson Acolyte
Strength of Unity
Ruham Djinn *2
Fight or Flight
6 Island
6 Forest
5 Plains
Irrigation Ditch
This is no typical U/W/G deck, it has almost no Tappers (merely 2) and Shackles (namely 0) and not a single Flyer! (Only one Wings of hope and Sky Weaver)
On the other hand there is quite some beatdown in this deck, like the Titan, the Djinns and the other Kavus.
Other powerhorses were the Excludes, the Cloak and the Fight or Flight.
I guess there are quite a few people who would have played Shimmering Wings in a deck without flyers or cards like Worldly Counsel, Capashen Unicorn or something else, but those were partly in the sideboard, partly newer saw play due to my mana curve or plans with the deck.
I hoped to get good results as the combination of beatdown and control probably could bring good results, in fact I was satisfied with the deck, although I missed some tappers and such…
Round 1
I played against a newbie and had an easy day, since he played only 2 colors (W/U) and his deck included cards like Phantasmal Terrain *2 and Teferi's Response maindeck, as he hadn't had any other blue or white cards…
He never even dealt me damage and I could easily finish him off.
But I still didn't know whether my deck was really good or not, since this was no real opponent (I know, everyone starts small).
1-0 ; 2-0
Round 2
Against Helmut Summersberger (Austrian Champion, 6th at Worlds 2000) (B/R/u/w) (Top 4)
This was bad luck, I had to face him, although he had lost his first game, as there were no draws in round one and there was an odd number of people with 3 points so someone had to play against one with 0 Points. Normally this would be an advantage, but not if one gets such a strong opponent.
Game one:
I had a smooth start and brought him to 4 with a Djinn, the Titan and a Tapper helping me. He disrupted my hand with probe and hypnotic Cloud, forcing me to discard an Exclude. But I managed to draw another one countering his Dragon. But when his creature removal started he never let my a chance anymore, once I was able to tap away his only creature to deal him one more damage, but that was it. I survived for quite a few rounds, though, as I had my fight or flight in play.
Game two:
I played some creatures and a fight or flight, but had to discard my titan, Serpentine Kavu, exclude and almost everything else…
Once he also killed a Kavu Climber with recoil…
As his dragon entered play, I was able to stop him with my Tapper, but as it was killed, my only chance was enchanting a nomadic elf with wings of hope and 'trying' to topdeck explosive growth. I really succeeded getting it, but unfortunately my elf was killed before his attack, and therefore my plan failed and my last bit of hope vanished.
1-1 ; 2-2
Round 3
Against R/B/G
Game one:
Quirion Elves helped me to play 4th Round Kavu Titan and 5th Round Djinn. My opponent had plenty cards in his hand and lots on mana, but only black and green one and because of this I was easily able to handle him and take home victory.
Game two:
Still not knowing about his third color I simply played and, although he cast some removal, could win, again with accelerated mana (the cameo) and my excludes. I would have had problems, though, if the sky weaver wouldn't have let my djinns fly…
My opponent, still not having drawn a single mountain in the whole match, showed me his hand afterward and I saw cards like Void, Ghitu Fire and Tsabo Tavoc, cards that are a treat for every deck, cards that would easily have killed me in that game…
We played twice more just for fun and, as he drew red mana, it was really close; therefore we both won one more game…
2-1 ; 4-2
Round 4:
Against B/R/u
Game one:
Um, let's say it this way, an opponent with only 3 lands in the whole game who sees his creatures being countered seldom wins …
Game two:
This time he draw mana, lots of mana. He could play everything on his hand and it was a close fight, even both djinns and a serpentine Kavu weren't enough to deal him more than only 1-2 points of damage per turn. Then followed a turn with 12 as the significant number: he played a land providing him 12 mana on his next turn (it came into play tapped) and we both had 12 life. I thought to myself, that next turn he could play Urza's Rage, if he had got it out of his packs, and smiled, not believing this could really be true. I drew my sky weaver, gave my Djinns and one Galina's Knight flying and hit him for 12, what brought me the match.
Any idea what he had on his hand? Yes, Urza's Rage…
3-1 ; 6-2
Only one more round to go and my friend was leading, being the only person with 4-0. I have to admit that I wasn't really surprised due to knowing his deck…
Round 5:
Against B/R/G
This was the funniest part of the tournament and showed the quality of my deck; I played against this really strong one, including Tsabo Tavoc and Kavu Titan and easily managed to beat my enemy in all 5 games we played. No matter what he cast, I always had a response, either a exclude, or stronger creature and so on. e.g. he once tried to kill one of my djinns by playing explosive growth on one of his creatures. In response I played my growth and his fatty died…
In another game he zapped my sky weaver that would have killed him with his ability and I repulsed it…
It was amazing how good the deck worked (and I played
), hardly could my opponent believe that he wasn't able to win a single game out of 5, but that's magic, you need luck AND skills
4-1 ; 8-2
My companion drawed a match he would have won easily to ensure his victory and to be the first one out of our team to win a tourney in Salzburg…
I myself got 4th, due to opponent score. I had the same amount of points as the 3rd and 2nd one, but that's what tiebreakers are for…
I enjoyed playing this tournament, though, as I didn't make any bigger mistakes, my deck was a good base and Invasion limited in general is great.
I hope you enjoyed reading,
thanks for your time,
