I have found lately, that there is a growing trend among MOTL members. More and more play magic competetively, and (it seems) exclusively so. Now, there's nothing wrong with playing only competetively, if you don't have enough time, or for whatever other reason. But Magic is a game, meaning that it should be fun, not a drag.

I admit, I've never been to a real tournament, or even a FNM, simply because I live in a rural area, but when I play with my friends, we have fun. We play with decks that aren't legal (unglued, banned cards) but it's more fun than if the emphasis was only on winning, because we create decks (without limits) around ideas that can be made fairly easily. And while the deck is not near as strong as say replenish, or bargain, it is more fun to play because the deck is something that you made.

When I play my B/W Paladin/distorting lens deck, it gives me a good feeling to know that there aren't too many like it. It's something that I made. And it plays the way I want it, because I built it.

And that is where there is a weakness in the Magic Community. There are not enough people that make decks for fun. They simply look at what others are doing, and copy, or near-copy. Or if they have an idea for a cool deck, they discard it, because it takes cards from too many sets, and would never be tourney worthy in type 1.5 or 1. Big Deal. Play it FOR FUN with your friends. That is where most of my decks came from. my paladin deck, my rootwater matriarch/shimmering wings deck, and a couple of others. Try it sometime. It's really fun if you play against somebody else's fun deck. You won't be disappointed (Unless of course you just really really suck at deck building )

C'mon, ppl. Play for fun. It will make the world a better place.

not to jump on you but just b/c you are super-competitive doesn't mean you are sucking the fun out of the game

none of us consider deckbuilding and metagame research a "chore" if that's what you're thinking
